National Obsession...And it is a Marathon!

Last week I wrote about the Olympics and the way it brings our family--and our nation--together (http://activerain.com/blogsview/638157/Ode-to-the-Olympics).

It has been 9 days since we watched that amazing opening ceremony. So much has happened: we learned that the little girl singing in the ceremony was not actually the little girl singing, Michael Phelps has proven himself to be the most elite of elite athletes, Dara Torres has given the 'over 40' crowd a little extra inspiration and countless athletes have proven that all of their hard work was worth it! We celebrate them all...but I am exhausted!

I am not a late night person and I have not gotten to bed before 11:30 pm since this started and I have still missed some of the great moments.  Last night we were at a wonderful dinner party. At 10:18 we all got up from the table and left the deck to go in and watch Michael Phelps swim ...and then we kept watching (I confess to watching the tv through the window when Dara Torres was swimming for her silver medal).

I bring this up because I would really love to go to bed early tonight  with a good book, or even catch up on some of my television shows. But I cannot.  We are all in this marathon together and we must cheer for the team!

I was watching Michael and Dara swim with my mother, over the phone!  She's in Michigan and I'm in Illinois.  It's addictive but there's just something about it!

I agree, I am exhausted because I don't want to miss anything spectacular.  I was disappointed for Dara Torres that she just barely lost her race but I am tremendously impressed by her.

This is TOO funny!  I am cruisin' around on AR tonight because I...am...too...tired...to...do...anything...else!  I'm dying here!  And I blame the Olympics..LOL...more women's gymnastics tonight but I really, really, really want to get back to the book I started reading before this madness began.  But I know tonight will end like every other night...after 1:00 a.m., with me too keyed up to think about sleeping...arrrgghh!  I'm glad to know I am not alone.

Holly -

I think what Phelps has done is absolutely incredible - but I, as well, are on Olympics Overload.  Can't get any sleep due to the time change, looking for live coverage.

(It still amazes me that any civilized country on the planet can get by without 162 games of baseball each year, though!)

We also watch for local faves - Christina Loukas, for example, on the high dive, and others.

BTW - when you get tired of watching the Olympics, check out our other national obsession - The Chicago Cubs!

If anyone knows a great place where I can buy Mylanta by the bucketful, let me know!

I have to say I have had fun watching some of the events, but what is really funny is how many people are getting excited about sports that at any other time couldn't fill a dining room table with fans... like handball.

Holly, I am going to bed early tonight!  It's been hard to turn off the TV this week!

I am glad I a not the only one!  We did not watch (too much) of the Olympics on Sunday and it was a bit of a relief.  Last night, it was back on, however. My whole family is now regularly going to bed at 11:30. I need it to stop...I walk around like I am in a daze. Today I am particularly exhausted, although we are getting in to the homestretch.

I couldn't do it.  Thank goodness for DVR!!  Those nights were too late for me.  I just couldn't hang but didn't want to miss my favorite events either.
