Herndon High School's Amazing Guitar Program

This is a big year for my family. My second daughter graduated from college and my youngest, a son, will graduate from high school and move on to college.

As a result of these milestones, I am currently going through a lot of 'lasts' (the 'firsts' will come soon enough, I know).

Last night was my son's final Guitar Ensemble concert. After 4 years in the program, he is a pretty Guitar at Herndon High, Spring 2014accomplished guitarist thanks to the commitement and efforts of his amazing guitar teacher at Herndon High School, Mr. Chris Cunningham.

Mr. Cunningham has created an award winning program and created a passion within these kids that you rarely see continue as  the Seniors get closer and closer to graduation. These kids literally cannot wait until their concert day arrives!

If you are going to be sending a student to Herndon High School, a Fairfax County Public School located in Herndon Virginia (and serving portions of Reston, too), do yourself a favor and check out the program. I promise you that you will be astounded at the level of play and the passion for Guitar that the students demonstrate (I had hoped to post a clip of the kids performing, but my technology failed).

They ended the concert by having all 140 kids from 4 levels of guitar on the stage playing a Santana song. It was amazing. What was particulaly exciting about it was that the songs played in an instructional class are often classic and designed to teach specific skills--and they definately play that type of instructional music. This choice was an opportunity for all of the students to play together and enjoy playing contemporary music.

It was inspiring to watch these guitar students all enjoy themseleves so much! Thanks for all you have done to make these students guitarists, Mr. C!!
