Things to do in Northern Virginia: Santa Arrives on the Potomac

Many federal employees got a special gift from President Obama last week when he gave them an extra holiday by closing the Federal Government on Christmas Eve.

If you are left looking for something fun to do today, December 24, 2012, why not head to National Harbor and greet Santa as he water-skis on the Potomac River? This year he will be joined by his reindeer, as well as the Grinch, Frosty the Snowman and, of course, Santa's Elves.

We took our kids to see this uniquely Washington Tradition a couple of years ago, and it is a lot of fun. Bundle up, bring along some hot chocolate and watch Santa and his pals arrive along the Potomac River.

Santa will arrive at 1:00 p.m. at National Harbor, 150 National Plaza, Fort Washington. For more information, call 877-628-5427 or go to www.waterskiingsanta.com. Please note that this is a newer location for Santa's arrival, so if you have watched it in the past, you will need to pay attention to the new location.

Merry Christmas!

Holly, what a great tradition.  I lived in DC... Alexandria and Centerville, specifically, for seven years, and this is a tradition I was not aware of.  It sounds like fun to watch.  I think YOU should get some water skis and personally take part.  You'd make a great Christmas Elf, I am sure.

Also... I think it's great that President Obama gave the government folks the day of Christmas Eve off.  That's really thoughtful.  It's so nice to have such a caring "family man" as President.
