Reston Residents: Proposed Fairfax County Recreation Center

There is a proposal to build a Fairfax County Recreation Center at Brown's Chapel, off of Baron Cameron Avenue in Reston, Virginia.

The new site, as proposed, would include indoor tennis and an indoor swimming pool, as well as a work-out facility and meeting rooms.  The recreation center would be part of the Fairfax County Parks, but the land would be Reston land.

The land at Brown's Chapel currently is the home of Reston Day Camps, has baseball fields, walking paths, running trails, a basketball court, a chapel that used both for services and community meetings and a tot lot. It is a beautiful site with many mature trees.

The board of the Reston Association has been holding hearings this Spring and early Summer to get community input about this issue.

More information about these sessions is available on the Reston Association site, Proposed Indoor Recreation Facility. The last session is scheduled for:

South Lakes District hosted by Kathleen Driscoll McKee,
RA Vice President & District Representative
Tuesday, July 21

7 -8:30 p.m.
Sunset Hills Montessori School assembly room
11800 Ridge Heights Road, Reston

If you have not been able to attend any of these meetings, you can still provide your input by printing out a copy of the survey and faxing it to the Reston Association, attention Amelia Townsend. The fax number is 703-435-6516

There is a website  and organization that has been organized by residents who do not support this location for the proposed recreation center .  The website is www.savebrownschapel.com.

It is important that all Reston Association members understand the impact of this proposal on the community and the impact on you as Reston Residents and residents of Small Tax District #5.

Make sure that you are an informed Reston Resident!

If I lived in Northern Virginia, it would be Reston.  My daughter rented there a few months before work took her to Baltimore and she just loved it.  This sounds like a nice facility, and it's great that you're getting the information out to your readers and prospective homebuyers in the area.

Margaret, Thanks for stopping by! It is important to get this information out. There are many issues about this proposal that will have an affect the community (location, financing,on-going costs, process) and feelings run strongly.  I want to make sure everyone has a chance to study the proposal for themselves.
